If you are crashing a lot, you can look up error codes to find out what might be actually going on at the error code database over at mylenium blog.

Be sure to read the followup post, in which the fellow at future stack says that Adobe worked with him to address the problems that he was having
Also, the After Effects Community Help search is a good way to search for error codes. It includes Mylenium’s error code database.
Finally, note that the most basic and important thing to do to address crashes with After Effects CS4 is to update to After Effects CS4 (9.0.2).
