A super easy way to create grass using fur descriptions and controlling where and how the grass will appear by using maps in Maya – another maya tutorial from our old friend Stuart Christensen.

When you need to make a grassy plane with some “defined” characteristics it’s easy to use a black and white textural map to make grass appear exactly where you want it to be by using the grass/fur preset. And, by customizing the baldness attribute you can create some cool multi-layered effects. This tutorial by Stuart Christensen will help you create some unique grassy terrain but the concept can be applied to any element that needs varied types of fur! Play around with this concept for awhile, sooner or later it will be very useful for creating environments for your scenes.
