A new resource and marketplace for digital sculptors has recently emerged in SurfaceMimic, which looks to be a fairly promising marketplace to purchase greyscale displacement maps specifically for Zbrush and Mudbox alphas and stencils.

Surface Mimic sells 3D scans of various surfaces, so artists can paint realistic details quickly and easily, without having to make everything from scratch

SurfaceMimic develops their content product by scanning real life material using a photometric stereo technique on a custom built 3D surface scanner taking multiple shots of the subject with the lighting at slightly different angles to the scanning surface.

The site can also take requests, so if you are in a position where you need something scanned that isn’t in the marketplace, they can arrange to build that material for you.

The site contains more than just greyscale displacements, offering some newer scan content as diffuse color, or unlit images that can be used for texture painting, and some depth maps as well, and typically, the greyscale alpha and stencils generally go for as little as $5.00 for 2048 x 2048 material. Be sure to check out their FAQ page, and the gallery page to browse all the content they have available at the moment.
