Shows how to export a Diffuse Color and a Displacement Map with Ptex by using Mudbox and then use those maps within Maya, rendering them with Mental Ray 3.1.

This movie shows you how to create a PTex mapping in Mudbox, import it into Maya, and then render it using the Mental Ray renderer

As always its seems with mental ray, there are some hidden and manual tweaks that need to be taken care of before you are able to use mental ray’s Ptex capabilities, by editing the maya.rayrc file and appending a registry for Ptex to the end of that file.

Ptex is an open source initiative from Disney Animation Studios, that allows you to apply textures directly to polygon faces without any involvement from UV’s, efficiently storing texture images into a single file, and many applications have picked up on utilizing Ptex in their workflows since, such as Mudbox, V-Ray, Mental Ray, 3DCoat, Maya, etc.
