Working with Shave and a Haircut for Maya for hair, Derek Flood found that some parts of the workflow are not documented well, and created this look at showing the technical steps for creating and using Curves in Maya for creating hair and eyebrows using Shave and a Haircut for Maya.

This video tutorial first uses the “Shave and a Haircut” plugin to generate curves which will drive a Maya Hair system, and then Paint Effects to generate eyebrow curves which will likewise drive a second Maya Hair system

Derek notes that while other tutorials will show some of the concepts needed, most do not cover how to incorporate the hair into an actual animated rig, other than simply parenting the hair system to a head as an example. Here, Derek shows how to incorporate the hair system so that it can follow facial animation and geometry cached animation. The real trick to grooming hair is using curves to shape the hair style. If you do not have the Shave plugin you can also generate the curves for the Maya Hair manually
