School of Motion’s Joey Korenman demonstrates a technique for faking a stop motion style or “claymation” style animation in Cinema 4D, taking inspiration from his work with Kyle Predki.

Joey creates a simple animation with a ball, and notes that there are a few key things to get the “stop motion” look, citing one of them to be setting the frame rate for the scene to a lower value. Another tip is to be generous with animation key frames which will inherently give a more natural hand animated look.

Joey also walks through creating the shader that will give the model the clay look, using animated displacements that will change the irregular features from frame to frame. Check out the tutorial for Creating a Claymation Look in Cinema 4D here.
