Creating-a-More-Accurate-Streering-Rig-in-Maya

Tech Artist Paul Atkinson takes a look at creating a realistic steering mechanism in maya using the Ackermann steering geometry principle.

Turning a car is not as simple as you think. There’s some quite advanced geometry at work to order to maintain the correct rotations for each front wheel in order to keep the turn ‘on track’

Paul builds an arrangement of linkages similar to the Ackermann Steering that will create a more realistic wheel turning rig in Maya. The Ackerman Geometry solves the problem of wheels on the inside and outside of a turn needing to trace out circles of different radius.
