One of my earliest memories in learning After Effects many, many years ago, was watching one of the sample files with an opening door, that used time displacements to control the rate at which the video played back.

This displayed multiple versions in “time” on the same frame, which gave the clip a weird, almost liquid look that really blew my mind back then.

See how After Effects can be used to displace time to create bizarre and other-worldly slit scan effects

Time Displacement is an old throw-back plugin in After Effects, and most probably one that the majority have forgotten about, simply because it has such vertical and niche uses.

Here, FilmmakerIQ posts not only a look at creating this slit scan photography effect in After Effects using the time displacement, but also provides some great information on what the plugin is mimicking, with some great background on slit-scan photography, a method for displaying temporal relationships.
