Matthew L. Stoehr shares a simple little script for Autodesk Maya that might prove helpful for randomly replacing objects with other objects in a scene. The Replace Add Randomize script even offers the opportunity to duplicate or instantiate while also providing an option to state how of many objects you want to be placed randomly.

imagine you create your tree and all it’s leaves based on the same leaf. Now you decide to create multiple variations of the same leaf, and want to place them into the tree

The Replace Add Randomize Script as Matthew notes, would be good for replacing proxy objects in a scene such as having a material and texture on your object and swapping out the placeholders. Check out the Replace Add Randomize Script over on Matthew L. Stoehr’s site here.
