More useful for just a camera shake, Rigger and technical artist Alastair Richardson share his arShake script for Autodesk Maya, that mimics a simple After Effects wiggler tool. Keeping in mind that there are many ways to create a random shake in Maya, the arShake tool offers some great and workflow efficient features.

arShake Tool

ArShake will allow you to create shake for any object in Maya, offering a handy panel to control and set parameters for the shake easily. The python script will provides control for frame range and shake values, with a per frame setting and the amount to translate or rotate the object.

It also gives an easy way to limit the shake, constraining it to relative axes. You can choose between having the shake on translate axes of X, Y, or Z, as well as being able to set the rotational axes for the shake effect.

One of the best parts of the arShake tool is the ability to set a curve for the effect. By designating a curve you can easily set a gradual increase and dearest of the effect based on a falloff for the effect’s animation.

arShake is flexible in the sense that you can animate your object first, then apply the shake effect over top of the animation that was created. The arShake Tool will sample existing animated translate and rotate values for an object and add some “controllable” randomness on an animation layer for that object. this make is easy to turn the shake effect on or off, and easily change the parameters of the shake.
