Animating Glitch Affected Type in After Effects

Mt. Mograph Matt Jylkka offers a look at creating glitch affected animated type in After Effects using a simple but effective technique, animating elements manually. Using both Adobe Illustrator and After Effects, Matt shows how to create and stagger the animation in Ae with a few workflow tips for working with and affecting multiple layers in After Effects.

Matt notes that you can use these simple concepts as a starting point and crassly build upon them to create different types of animated type in After Effects, animating different combinations of attributes for some varied looks.

Matt uses Ai to cut up the elements before bringing the type in After Effects -which will then be animated. The animation will be reminiscent of how a MoGraph cloner animation can look in C4D.

Cutting up your elements is a practical and pragmatic way to get the job done. There are third party scripts kicking around that can cut layers directly in After Effects saving some time, and offering a bit more automation and control over the workflow.

One of them happens to be the newly release Slice It Up for After Effects. Slice It Up offers a procedural and non-destructive way to slice your footage in After Effects and drops some controls in the effects panel to easily animate all the slices.
