Fundamental Modeling Techniques: Inserting and Combining Cylinders

FlippedNormals.com and Henning Sanden gives us another installment into the Fundamental Modeling Techniques series. This time he is having a look at connecting a cylinder to another cylinder, or to a larger overall shape.

This is an essential technique in modeling, especially for hard surface modeling, where creating a network or pipes or a support framework of some kind will require it too look like it was all completed in one piece.

Henning shows how to use simple modeling tools to achieve the connected look and discusses a bit about how to handle subdivision smoothing, which can help sell the idea of connection.

The demonstration takes place using Autodesk Maya and uses the Insert Edge Loop, Multi-Cut, Extrude, Connect and Boolean Combine. It is worthwhile to note that these types of tools are common in 3D applications, so you can still follow along using the proper counterparts. Check out FlippedNormals.com for more great tutorial in a wide variety of applications and subjects.
