Setting Up Your Own Pie Menus in Blender

Sebastian König walks though how you can create your very own pie menus in Blender. Recently Blender 2.72 has introduced Pie Menus as a new user interface feature, which will enhance user interaction in Blender. Sebastian notes that Blender’s backend has been implemented in C, but the actual pie menus can be easily written in Python. Sebastian offers a quick guide how you can setup your own menus within Blender.

Getting To Know Pie Menus

One of the things that I like best about Autodesk Maya are the marking (or Pie Menus). It is a super fast way to get around and implement tools in an application. If I had my way, all applications would use a pie menu or marking menu system – Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, etc.

It was Autodesk Research’s Gord Kurtenbach who pushed forward the “marking menu” and has done extensive work on marking and pie menus and human interaction. Check out his short write up detailing Notes on the History of Radial menus, Pie menus and Marking menus – its interesting to see how it all started.
