Motion Graphics Artist Tony Pinkevich posts a look at creating controls for a walk cycle animation in After Effects… And it’s not what you are thinking. This is not a step by step tutorial on how to get a walk cycle animation going in Ae.

Rather this is a great look at how to get an already animated walk cycle usable in a scene – How to get it moving and walking anywhere in the scene you want the character to go easily.

how to create controls for a walk cycle animation so you can easily pull the character through the scene

Tony shows expertly how to create controls for a walk cycle animation so you can easily pull the character through the scene and NOT have the feet look like they are skating across the ground. The tutorial walks through building controls and adding expressions to link everything up to a time remap.

This way you can easily animate a walk cycle animation to any point in the After Effects scene without having to worry about if everything is working out speed wise.

Tony also covers a great tip for creating a simple set up where other objects in the scene will pass by the character at the right speeds for the walk cycle animation to have everything work at the same rate. If you do any type of character animation, this is not to be missed.

Tony has also released the working project files for the tutorial, so you are able to go through them and see how everything was put together: Comfortable controllers Tutorial Project File.

As mentioned previously, this tutorial is not on how to create a walk cycle, although Tony did provide a time-lapse of creating one at some point. Check the Walk Cycle Animation tutorial below.
