More than a few people, including myself have labeled Mikey as “clever”, especially when it comes to After Effects tricks. What is appreciated is that Mikey always seems to be clever where it counts, in the pragmatic and practical stuff.

What is an effects sandwich?

Have you ever wanted to rotate and effect in After Effects that didn’t have a rotate attribute? For example, taking the Mosaic Effect and tilting it at an angle for a more interesting effect? Well, an effect like Mosaic doesn’t have a built in attribute to rotate the effect alone.

Mikey Borup shows us how this can be possible by using what he calls “the effects sandwich™” in After Effects. By effectively placing an effect between to transform effects, you can transform the effect alone, without affecting the layer or anything else in your Ae project. I know. It seems like something that you wouldn’t need to use too often – but boy, when you do… remember “the effects sandwich™”!

What a phenomenal tip. The possibilities with this technique are infinite! Mikey is clearly a genius.
I’m off to try a double sandwich with 2 directional blurs rotating in opposite directions.

I’d love to see what you come up with.
