CG Artist and trainer Lars Scholten has a look at creating a material switch or object swap in C4D using xPresso. In this short tutorial Lars shows how you can easily swap a material on a object using User Data and bit of xPresso.

A while back, Michael Auerswald showed how to create a simple proxy switch in a Cinema 4D using Xpresso in conjunction with data fields. Also of note, is a tutorial from Paulo Barrelas that also walked through creating an automated system that will allow you to create a material switch using a bit of Xpresso. Somewhat related, Julian Field, talked a bit about how the xPresso Switch node worked and how to use it in a practical example.

Switching between objects can also be useful for speeding up workflows with dynamics. By using proxy objects and altering the resolution of objects in the scene, Ben Keating shows how to using Xpresso to create a subdivision control and a proxy switch.

NitroMan’s MagicSwitch sort of automates the process for switching things out in C4D. The free plugin will let you create a toggle for an objects attributes easily, so you can go back and forth between your two object states.
