Rigging a Squash and Stretch Ball for Animation in Modo

Modo started out as a modeling tools and quickly grew into so much more. Modo has turned into a capable tool for the technical arts such as rigging and animation since it’s inception.

Along that line, here Chris Offner shows how you can create a bouncing ball rig, with squash and stretch controls in Modo, preparing it for the animation pipeline.

Chris uses Tim Crowson’s PopUp script in this tutorial, which can be found on his site: Modo Popups.

Learning to rig in Modo can be a challenge as there are not too many resources around that will train people to do so. Thankfully, we have Richard Hurrey, a modeling and character technical director at Pixar Animation Studios, who has put together a Rigging Master Course in Modo.

The course spans over 26 hours (yes 26) of key-word searchable video content with indexed chapter markers and cross referenced links. The Foundry notes that the Master Rigging Course is really designed for all levels of users and provides the ‘how’, and the often missing ‘why’ behind rigging concepts. It really is an entire master class course that will give you new insights into how MODO works and what it is capable of.
