There are plenty of low cost devices that will allow you create 3D scans f from real life objects. Consumer products like the Kinect, to PhotoScan, can be used as a 3D scanner and most of the tools are affordable and easy to use.

But did you know that you can use a 3D tracking application like SynthEyes as a 3D scanner? Here, Matthew Merkovich shows how you can use SynthEyes’ tracking along with a swivel chair and camera, to create a 3D scan of his own head.

This is a great exercise in adjusting images within SynthEyes to solve for tracking points, which eventually will become the familiar point-cloud network that we all associate with 3D scans.
