Adding Your Own Smart Materials to 3D Coat

Mike Hermes takes a break from Maya tutorials and moves over to 3D Coat. Here, Mike shows the basics for using Smart Materials in 3D Coat, but also walks through how you can make your own, from scratch.

how to create a new smart material from scratch, add it to 3D Coat and apply it to an object.

The latest big release for 3D Coat added a new physically based rendering system, and along side that, a new Smart Materials System. The new materials are really easy to use in 3DC.

Smart Materials are a large part of the PBR workflow in 3D Coat and have a number of components within the application. Applying a smart material not only reacts accurately to light, but also takes some of the object’s properties into consideration.

The new PBR Workflow encompasses viewport shading, painting conditions and Import/Export of Smart Material Texture maps and Smart Materials for painting physically accurate materials. Mike shows how to import texture maps and create smart materials from them, that can be used in your own work.
