Algorithmic posts some insights into the next frontier of texturing workflow solutions that is based on a common comment from industry professionals. A piece of the puzzle between content creation and modern games, is missing. There is no tool that allows you to visualize complex materials and shaders while you are working on texturing. This is where Dynamic Material Layering comes in, and it will be coming to a Substance Painter near you soon.

Substance Painter Product Manager Jeremie Noguer as he gives a look at Dynamic Material Layering.

Algorithmic hopes that Dynamic Material Layering will offer an extremely accurate preview of the final in-game asset, while still allowing artists to use all the tools such as painting and masking tools that Substance Painter offers.

By tagging shader in Substance Painter, it can automatically generate a custom UI that will allow you to easily blend materials and paint masks. Technical artists can provide artists with a template. This allows the artist to still have the artistic freedom hey need while also keeping them within production boundaries to control performance and shader costs.

Substance Painter can export and pack the masks along with a side-car file that describes how to reassemble the materials together again, so that it can be transferred to any engine and automatically converted into a working material.
