Working With Redshift Native Lights in Houdini

As with any other renderer in a host package like Houdini or Maya, Redshift can easily work with the lights that are available there. There is a case for using the renderer-specific lights that come with the renderer that you are using. Native lights were made to work with the GPU renderer which means that they are more efficient. They will also offer a few features that cannot be found in other lights.

Here, Rohan Dalvi posts a look at the lights in Redshift and shows off using the IPR in Houdini, which can be great for lighting. Rohan covers using areas lights, setting and using geometry lights, sun and sky systems, and the dome light.

It’s interesting to note that Redshift can use multiple dome lights, not only for lighting but also environment reflections and other fun stuff. I haven’t really seen that kind of feature with another renderer. The tutorial is the second installment of Rohan’s dive into getting started with the ludicrously fast GPU renderer.
