Modeling With T-Splines in Fusion 360

Fusion 360 offers three different methods for modeling surfaces and objects. These include Solids, Surfaces and T-Splines. Which is best and for what job? When should you use one over the other? This short 10 min tutorial can help get you centered.

Fusion 360 is great for quickly prototyping and modeling out hard surface models from concept art, or simply just messing around.

All three methods offer the benefits of parametric objects, while t-Splines adds the ability to model parametrically while using techniques that are similar to polygon modeling. There are a few differences though, gaining control over T-Splines is important.

The specialty splines are a kind of NURBS/Poly hybrid, where you can add detail only where you need it, quads don’t matter, and they make it easy to create freeform objects and shapes. Unlike NURBS you can “terminate” an edge without having it follow through the entire model, like a T shape… hence the name.

Since the T-Splines technology is compatible with CAD modeling apps, it integrates nicely with most production pipelines.
