Tech-Artist and FX TD Florian Eggers has a look into how to displace edges in Houdini using the Arnold rendering engine. Why would you want to displace edges? For more realistic destruction simulations, of course. The tutorial comes to us in two parts, where part one shows how to create renter time edge displacement with Houdini Arnold. Part two look into a slightly different technique that is able to fix the UV distortions that are created when trying to displace the edges of the geometry.
Florian makes note that he is not the originator of this technique. His tutorial was inspired by one from Lo_Fnatic who showed how to create an edge displacement shader over a year ago. That video showed a simple technique that didn’t require the ForEach SOP and complicated Matrixes.
