Creating a Vector Field Compound for Softimage ICE

Paul smith shows how to create a vector field in Softimage ICE where he defines a “vector field” as curve to make a vector flow over an object, something that has plenty of purposes in Softimage ICE.

Getting Started in Softimage ICE

Andy Nicholas with an overview of the workings of the Softimage ICE where he shows how to create a particle system and how to manipulate it with the ICE tree.

This video is for anyone who wants to get a very simple overview of how to make a particle system in ICE and how to manipulate it.
I’m mainly using the ICE menu on the left hand side to set up the tree, as it gives a very easy way to experiment without having to understand everything at once. (By the way, I’m not trying to make anything pretty here! It’s just a demo of basic capabilities)

Using Vector Subtraction in Softimage to Put a Point on a Curve

Softimage support’s Stephen Blair show how to use Vector Subtraction to Put a Point on a Curve in Softimage ICE demonstrating the importance of vector math such as subtraction.

Stephen Blair writes: When you’re moving points around with ICE, it’s important to understand the basics of vector math, such as vector subtraction. It’ll help you understand and visualize (in your head) what you’re really doing when you plug together nodes in an ICE.
To demonstrate, I show how to use vector subtraction to move a point on to a circle.

A Walkthrough of emNewton2 for Softimage

Eric Mootz walks through the new emNewton2 2.0 plugin for Softimage’s ICE that can be used to create simulations that are driven by an implementation of Sir Isaac Newton’s Law of universal Gravity, such as solar systems or stars with an accretion disc.

mNewton2 is an implementation of Sir Isaac Newton’s Law of universal Gravity, which roughly goes like this:
“Each particle attracts each other particle with a force that is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.” This plugin for Softimage’s ICE can be used to create simulations that are driven by gravity, such as solar systems or stars with an accretion disc. Furthermore this plugin has a “fusion” functionality meaning that intersecting particles melt together. emNewton2 is well integrated into ICE and works nicely with the built-in compounds such as forces, obstacles, subframe sampling and other effects.

Creating a Raindrops Simulation in Softimage ICE

Victor Fernández Cotura demonstrates a rain drop simulation in Softimage ICE and also shares the compounds involved.

Victor Fernández Cotura writes: I thougt it would be nice to have the tutorial from the Softimage Wiki as compiled as possible and here are the results. Here are the compounds:

Creating Particle Sprites Using Softimage ICE

Caffine Abuse’s Ola Madsen looks at creating particle sprites with a Softimage ICE tree, as well as getting the sprites to face the camera. Ola also makes the project files available for download. Check out the Creating Particle Sprites Using Softimage ICE tutorial here.

Instancing Textures with Softimage ICE

Paul Smith continues his ICE craziness with a look at using ICE and pixel particles to instance non-distorting image samples on to a deforming mesh.

Paul Smith writes: This is using ICE (and pixel particles) to instance non-distorting image samples onto a deforming mesh. In this version It is grabbing a random section of a texture, but It can be also be controlled with precision, so you can have exactly what image you wish to have at whatever particle. I am getting increasingly interested in the potential of texture manipulation and generation in ICE.. I’m also looking forward to trying out this Image input output plugin.

And even though this can all be done now, ideally the Softimage devs will add optimised and supported Image processing in ICE in the future.

Rock Generator Softimage ICE Compound

A look at an ICE compound by Fabricio Chamon that will generate Rocks procedurally with attributes for rock shape, erosions, and high frequency displacements. Fabricio Chamon notes that the rock generator is based on Sascha Henrichs’ workflow (vimeo.com/10163233).

noise types:
level 1: cellular (overall rock shape)
level 2: fractal (erosions)
level 3: turbulence (high frequency displacement)

comes with rock shader rt compound.

video at 2x speed.

Motion Tools for Softimage Tools for Motionographers

Gustavo Eggert Boehs shares a collection of Softimage scripts and ICE compounds to ease the workflow of motion designers (a collection of Cinema 4d moGraph like tools for Softimage) Gustavo notes that “this is a WIP if you can provide ideas for features or different behaviour stuff should have, those would be greatly apreciated. Also if you get to use it and can report any problems you have that would be sweet.”

A set of tools (compounds and little scripts) to aid Softimage Motionographers. I’m trying to ease the workflow as much as possible, as I dont need to tackle speed and customizability since ICE takes care of that.
