PEter Quint with another great tutorial on Houdini, this time with a video walkthrough of a FLIP fluid simulation of a wine spill. This looks at tricks with proxy objects to speed up simulations, how to use forces to create more interesting splashes, and the basics of particle fluid surfacing.

The project file is available from here?.

Note this is quite an advanced tutorial, a basic grounding in DOPs RBD simulations, and DOPs Forces is assumed.

I’ve used FLIP fluids in this example because the simulation is much faster than SPH fluids. As a general rule however FLIP fluids are better for large areas of liquid, and simulations such as this, which involve small amounts of liquid, and splashes, are better done with SPH fluids. All the techniques shown in this video work equally well with SPH fluids, except the initial filling of the glass with fluid.
