A look at creating a manual Depth Pass using Autodesk Maya and using those results for compositing post effects in After Effects, such as DOF. This tutorial comes to us via Aaron Nosan who sets up a grey depth pass from a render layer in Maya that will be used for controlling effects in After Effects.

Depth of Field setup in Maya 2011 and applied in post After Effects. from Aaron Nosan on Vimeo.

“This tutorial guides you through the setup of DOF in Maya 2011 to applying the rendered layer in After Effects CS4. When ready to render the Luma layer remember it must be batch rendered, it won’t show up if you render a still image. Saving it as a tga, tiff, iff will do.
If you have any questions let me know and I’ll get back to you asap.”
