Stuart Christensen takes a look at using smart textures in Maya provided by Allegorithmic as Substance textures, showing how to start creating and using Substance procedural texture networks and provides some pointers on using Substance textures in a Maya scene.

…In this tutorial by Stuart Christensen, you will learn about how to use the new substance node to create these texture networks…

Substance textures are hybrid textures that have all the benefit and realism of image based textures, with all the flexibility and resolution of procedurally built textures providing the best of the two.

With the Substance node in Maya, you are able to quickly create photorealistic procedural textures using a library material presets. You are also able to use substances as noise or filters for texture networks within Maya as you are able to create infinite variations.
