after effects

IK for after effects, yes I said IK for after effects.

Wait… what? IK for after effects? well that is just glorious. Seriously, this is just nothing short of amazing! This is a script for use with after effects created by Nicolas Dufresne that will allow you to build simple IK chains from parental structures. Don’t get me wrong, this is in fact good news, however I do need to point out that it is a hack. Not the script itself, of course I take no argument with the script, but the fact that there is need for a script like this to me only means that after effects lacks in yet another area. There is of course the argument for sparking creative and innovative 3rd party products for an application by allowing developers such as Nicolas Dufresne, to write add-ons by means of scripting and api’s, that is all fantastic, however, introducing parenting a few versions back without any other sort of controls systems, constraints, or IK is just a short sighted hack… but add the puppet tool instead…well – don’t get me started. If you do use and like after effects and don’t want to switch to another application, then thank god for Nicolas Dufresne who is absolutely nothing short of genius.

well now wait, I’ve just run through this with his latest version 13.0.2 and where I’m trying to ‘create IK’ its telling me to ‘select bones and controller before creating IK’ … when I try to select a layer and create bones it asks me to select a ‘corner’… this makes me figure this is somehow for use with the puppet tool. But I want a rigid character, just like your example.

Any thoughts? I’d really appreciate your input.

    Cheers!
