3D Coat recently updated to v 3.1, and even more recently created the 3D Coat training channel on vimeo, featuring videos geared towards showing off the features and workflow of 3D Coat. You can also read a review on 3D Coat at CGenie.
This video covers some of the basic for direct pixel painting in 3D-Coat. Direct pixel painting allows you to paint directly onto a LOW polygon mesh without the need for many levels of subdivision.
If you are unfamiliar with 3D Coat, and all the hype in the last while, it is a voxel sculpting, per pixel painting, re-topology, and microvertex painting program at a pretty impressive price point for the type of features that it owns. Don’t just take my word for it, try it out by downloading a trial version for mac, linux, or windows here.
