after effects puppet tool, parenting for character animation

By May 11, 2010One Comment

Robert Powers with a look at using after effects’ puppet tool and parenting to create a character that can be animated. I have never had any success with the puppet tool, it seemed to me to be a feature that was conceptualized, but only maybe implemented less than 10% of what it was supposed to be. The IK bone tool in flash, or the character tools in toon boom are a great example of where the puppet tool could be in after effects. However, Robert Powers does a great job with such a limited tool!

As a side note, there are scripts available to create IK chains in after effects, check a previous post for information on such a thing.
