Matt Beckham passed a little note to me notifying me of a little breakdown that he has provided for how he went about to create this rendering of a whiskey bottle and glass in Cinema 4D. You can check out Matt’s post on his BreakDown for creating a Whisky Bottle Studio Setup in Cinema 4D here.

“I started working on this scene with a different approach than I’ve taken with studio-style glass renders in the past. My glass shader was almost devoid of any specularity, and I opted out of using any actual area lights around the bottle. Instead I setup a series of bounce cards one-by-one with Global Illumination on. The material applied was 100% in the luminance channel. This gave me a much cleaner reflection and with less glare.”

Matt talks a bit about his studio lights set up, how the bottle was textured, and a bit about the rendering process for the scene. In addition to all this, Matt is also providing the Cinema 4D scene file for the whiskey bottle rendering project which is an infinitely helpful look for understanding the process.

I do have to add, that if anyone wishes to share a breakdown of any project that they are particularly proud of or used some crazy-cool technique in, that you should definitely drop me a note.

I feel the more people share with the CG community the better that makes us, so please drop me an email and please share, and I will make sure that it gets out to the site.

  1. I’d love to see more breakdowns for sure! i’ll do my best to contribute as well.
I’m impressed with the glass material Matt has created. Looking into the high rez image, he’s figured out how to make the micro etchings and blemishes a bottle would gain through packaging and handling. I don’t know if i’m convinced with the bourbon material though. I like the refractions, but maybe making it a little less murky? The bottle in my cupboard suggests a clearer liquid.

Solid piece! Matt has come major C4d chops.
