MOMA… what is this? Well, moma is a link between Modo and Maya, particularly allowing you to use Modo’s renderer within Maya. This might seem like a completely vertical tool, and for the most part, it is; However, if you have Luxology’s Modo and Autodesk Maya, and a production need to connect the two, then there is a tool for you!

Jacobo Barreiro shows of some development progress made on his moma (version 0.5), which he describes as “the sweetness of modo’s renderer and preview brought into Maya”. The latest iteration sees some important speed and performance improvements, particularly in the area of feedback.

moma is a bridge between Luxology modo’s renderer and Autodesk Maya. It’s mainly a connection between them where all the data is being generated in Maya while a constant two ways communication is established with modo’s renderer to update and query scene values

If you are unfamiliar moma, it is Jacobo’s effort to use modo’s renderer right within maya. moma bridges modo and Maya where Maya’s data which includes geometry, animation cameras, lights, materials and other items, can actually communicate to modo’s renderer to update and query Maya scene values.

This really started as a personal challenge for Jacobo, and a way to have Maya users experience modo’s render engine without leaving Maya, and Jacobo carries the goal polishing and having moma as a production ready alternative to third party renderers that are currently available for Maya. Be sure to check out the moma development page for more information and up-to-date developments on moma and where it is headed.
