Vladimir Tomin was so kind to email me the other day saying “hey lester!” and also “I have a project that you may be interested in, please check out this video.” I did in fact check out the video, and it was some good work, so I thought I would share Building Trust, a promo animation created by Vladimir Tomin. Vladimir also provides some insight to the making of the animation for us all:
“The whole project was done mostly in After Effects CS4 (could easily be done in CS3 as well), used a lot of scanned pencil drawings. No frame-by-frame animation were used, only animation of scale/position/rotation of layers. Aside of illustration part, the most difficult part were animation of camera, took long time to make it more or less right. As for the process, it all starts with an idea, next I think out scenario, next I’m getting paper and draw storyboard. After storyboard is finished, looking on it I analyze what illustrations I will need. After I finished drawing everything scanned and cutted in Photoshop. Shadow work was done in Photoshop too. I guess you know the rest. One note thou: try to prepare EVERYTHING you need BEFORE even start composing/animating. Draw moving parts of characters separately. I would also like to mention that half of experience done by great soundwork by this man: http://www.youtube.com/user/Vitaliiii
One more (might be interesting) thing on “Building trust” video! How I managed to make crystal in the end shine and play. It was surprisingly easy! I created 1 still image of this logo colored different parts in many colors and in after effect I just animated HUE and it pretty much did the trick automatically. It was something totally unexpected actually, but came in handy.
If any of readers want to know details on particular scenes/effects, please direct them on this email, I would love to answer as many letters as possible.”
Well I won’t post the email here, but you can check out Vladimir’s site, and contact him there! Thank you so much for continuing to visit lesterbanks, and thank you for the heads-up Vlad!

“Btw, I have another interesting project done some time ago: What’s cool about, it was done in 1 evening! I constructed 4 digits with newspapers, plasticine, cardboard, wires and some small stuff. Next I destroyed those digits piece by piece and took whole process on my cheap photo camera. Next, in after effects I reversed time for whole sequence to get effect of creation of digits. I also used after effect’s built-in “pixel motion” to make morph-like transitions between frames. Result was good enough for 1 evening work.”
