In checking the Sculptris site to something unusual, apparently Sculptris is now Pixologic Sculptris and has the moniker of Sculptris Alpha 5. Tomas Pettersson the creator of Sculptris is now moving to California from Sweden – It is unclear as to if this deal was a purchase, acquisition or just a job offer, however Sculptris is now offered as a Pixologic brand. Perhaps Pixologic wanted to acquire the dynamic tessellation technology that Sculptris offers for zBrush or perhaps a newer smaller product. Find out more at Pixologic…not sure how giving a free application away free is a gift… but there it is.
from the Sculptris page:
“I’m Tomas Pettersson, and I created this application for my own enjoyment over six months starting at the end of November 2009. It was developed as an unpaid hobby project during that time, but now I’m working with Pixologic™ to move the concept forward and make new great things. The original version 1.02 of Sculptris is now available under the name Alpha 5, free of charge for anyone to download and use without limitation. There is no official support, but an active and friendly community should be able to help you with any problems.
If you feel like Sculptris Alpha 5 is valuable to you, I can accept a personal donation for the effort spent making it. Any donations will be considered a welcome reward for the work I already did, but not as funding to encourage new functionality or updates. During the first month since release I received enough donations to buy me a laptop, which is something I had been putting off for years before. Thanks everyone!
Feel free to send me email if you have questions or comments (tomas@pixologic.com), but please take a look at the forum first to avoid asking something that has already been answered.”
