after effects tutorials, the basics for beginners

By October 18, 2010No Comments

Jack Grundy with a series (six so far) of tutorials for people who are just beginning and getting to know after effects with a focus on the tools and settings and how to apply that knowledge to your own projects to get you going. Great stuff Jack!

so we all know that there are tons of After Effects tutorials out there on the web, but i’ve decided to create my own series of these tutorials, going into the specifics of what the tools and settings allow you to do, and try show users how they can apply their knowledge of After Effects to their own projects rather than just show them techniques and workflows that are applicable to the particular tutorial in question.

in this first video we will be looking at the different panels that you will see when opening After Effects, discussing what they are and what some of their settings mean and/or allow you to do. attention is paid towards the info, effects & presets, tracker, and character panels in order to give a brief summary on their purpose as they will not be extensively covered until later tutorials.

in this second video we will look at how to import footage into After Effects and how to manually set up a composition. we will also see what information is supplied to us in the project panel about our footage to help us set up our composition more accurately

in this third video (part 1 of 2) we will explore the tools that we can use to both select, move and navigate around our footage including how to add masks on our layers and create text

in this fourth video (part 2 of 2) we will look at the toolbar menu and what options we have available to us from accessing them.

in this fifth video we take a look at how to use the tools available to us to create animation on our layers. this lesson covers creating keyframes, discussing the transformation options for a layer, and the keyboard short cuts we can use to navigate quickly to these parameters

AE Basics – 5. Animating Layers and Text from Jack Grundy on Vimeo.

in this sixth video we will explore the options we have available to us when we create masks as well as the different modes we can choose to adjust what they do. we also look at how to animate a mask and it’s properties; first the mask as a whole then moving on to individual points
