Controlling Complex Xgen Primitives in Maya 2015

Daryl Obert covers a variety of topics in Xgen, showing off some tips and tricks that he picked up over the course of using Maya’s Xgen arbitrary primitive generator. There are great tidbits in here for everyone, novice and experts alike.

Join Maya expert Daryl Obert as he walks through the ins and outs of using the new Xgen tools in Autodesk® Maya® 2015

Darylprovides some great examples for Xgen, showing how it can be used to create everything from hair to complex environments and goes further into controlling Xgen primitives by using expressions and modifiers that can offer you the ability to refine the tiniest of details.

Xgen in Maya

Xgen was initially seen in Maya 2014 extension release. It allows you to generate curves, spheres and custom geometry on the surface of polygons which can be useful to create fur, hair, feathers, or even populate landscapes with plants rocks and debris.

The premise behind XGen is that it creates the geometry at render time. This allows Maya to handle large amounts of instance data. This means that Xgen will remain pretty responsive in Maya’s Viewport 2, regardless of how complex the scene. With Xgen, you can flexibly control the primitives by setting attributes, creating expressions, using XGen grooming tools or by painting or using texture maps.
