Daniel Brodesky walks through how to use the After Effects “Optic Compensation” effect to create a transition effect. Typically the Optics Compensation effect in Ae, is meant for correcting and modifying camera lens, adding or removing distortion.

With Optics Compensation, if there are elements in your Ae composite that have a mismatched lens distortion, this can cause some issues. As an example, tracking elements in an undistorted scene, will not match other shots that used a different lens at the time of shooting.

The Optics Compensation effect in essence is just another distortion effect in Ae. With that, it can be used for creating motion graphics elements, and not just for altering the lens aberration on shots. Here, Daniel uses it to add a unique distorted look to some other effects in Ae, offering an interesting way to create transitions.
