A basic tutorial for Maya defining the attributes of the Depth of Field controls for a camera setup in Autodesk Maya from friend of the site Stuart Christensen.

“This super simple tutorial about camera Depth of Field (or, DOF) is a general explanation of the depth of field controls for any camera. This video is also a response to many questions I have received about the DOF settings. It is best to create a special “depth of field” camera to control specific parts of your scene if you need to rack focus or create a specific DOF camera effect. This tutorial by Stuart Christensen will introduce you to the “concept” of DOF, and show you some simple controls to create cool DOF renders! In a later tutorial, we will explore some various ways to better control this effect! So for now, just play around with the controls. Enjoy!”

  1. Hello,

    Thanks for the video
but for info, you can find the correct focus
here is a good trick: select the object that you want in focus and then show up the heads up display: “objects details”
it will tell you what is the distance between that object and the camera
that number is used for the focus distance

for a group of object do the same thing, just select your multiple object first
the heads up display will give you the distance between camera and the middle of the objects

it will be now much easier for you to find the correct focus distance right away
hope I was clear, my english is not perfect

    cheers!
