„Lawn mower or mom?“
The short combined 2D/3D animated movie Gardener Bill (Zahradník Bill) has been created on the basis of American nursery rhymes to which it directly refers by its visual side.
The entire movie is designed as a children’s poem that is being recited by a cute girl with braids. Light-hartedly colorful visual side covers up a story that does not end according to the little girl’s ideas. Cuteness of the visual side of the movie overlaps the lightly sad story whose meaning the viewer comes to realize just after the last shot.
Regardless of the slightly bitter end, the movie for its entire time gives positive impression. The characters are simplified to basic shapes as if cut out of wood. The rooms resemble those from a doll’s house. Simply everything evokes an impression of a sunny children’s room with a lot of similar toys scattered all around the carpet. And even though the background is 2D animated and the characters are 3D we believe that the result is thanks to the unusual combination of both techniques compact and perfectly fitting.
