Ryan Kittleson takes a look at getting started with Sculptris showing how Sculptris is great for quickly sculpting concepts. This represents a pretty good overview as Ryan has used and is well versed in Mudbox, Zbrush and others and points to the strengths and weaknesses of each.

…sculptris doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of zbrush. it just does one thing and one thing REALLY well: sculpting organic shapes from scratch. zbrush does? a lot of stuff, but the interface and workflow are so clumsy and complicated. Mudbox does sculpting well and easily, but doesn’t let you create meshes from scratch. I usually start with sculptris, retopo in maya and then finish in mudbox…

Sculptris is still offered freely from Pixologic where they are placing it at a bridge for getting started with sculpting, or if you are a sculpting pro, a great way to quickly block out forms and concepts.

Sculptris originally emerged as a unique sculpting tool with a “live clay” type of approach as there is no need to worry about polygon structure, edge flows, or even poly counts. Just add volume where you need it and sculpt details where you want them. It will automatically divide the mesh as you sculpt and only where needed for the details that you are sculpting. This really alleviates the need to manually add resolution to the entire model as you sculpt details making Sculptris a more natural sculpting experience.
