The Earlyworm CG posts some notes into his foray into implementing some color temperature control into a lighting workflow, providing some pretty great insights into mapping the temperature values to light sources in Maya. I decided rather than map every temperature value from 1000K to 40000K, I decided just to deal with 1000K to 10000K using the CIE 1964 10 degree Colour Matching Functions

This is kind of specific to Renderman, and Renderman complaint renderers like 3Delight. While renderers such as V-Ray already have the ability to key in temperature for their custom light shapes, it might be still relevant to take a look as it does provide a foundation for what is happening to Color Matching Functions and values in Linear space versus sRGB.
