Brian Freisinger shows how to obtain the diffuse and specular contributions of lights in a Maya Scene into separate render elements so that they can be worked in compositing after the fact instead of having a single lighting passes contain specular and other information in it.

…In this tutorial Brian Freisinger goes over the VRayLightSelect render element settings and techniques…

This is done by using the VRayLightSelect Render Element, and here Brian shows a simple workflow and covers some initial settings and techniques for creating passes with the VRayLightSelect Render Element.

By creating more than one VRayLightSelect Render Element and setting relationships between them and the lights that you have in the scene, you are able to create passes that only have one lighting contribution element, such as specular alone which is helpful in some cases for compositing.

Brian Freisinger notes that he has built a script that will allow you to set up diffuse and specular passes automatically for any selected lights that you have in the scene, which will prevent any human error in setting relationships, naming or accidentally forgetting a step in the workflow.
