CaffeineAbuse’s Ola Madsen walks us through the steps to create and animate a wall of lights using Softimage ICE showing an intuitive method for animating the light wall using a simple image sequence.

The perhaps most intuitive way to create different patterns for the lights switching on and off is by using a texture map, which in turn controls the lights based on the lightness of the images

Ola notes that if you were to use actual light sources, you will pay the price for it at render time, and in most scenarios you won’t be able to tell the difference from using a really bright material on the object instead.
