Shray Khanna sets up a workflow for working with game models in Autodesk Maya, where he shows how to use a LOD or Level of Detail Group feature in Maya which will swap out different models based on the distance of a camera.

This Quick Tip will help you utilize the LOD (level of detail) group feature in Maya, which Allows you to view the LOD’s of your game model directly inside Maya’s viewport based on the view distance

Setting an LOD group is quite simple in Maya, and can be quite helpful when working on game assets as you are able to see your model dynamically change resolution just as it would in a game engine, right in Maya, rather than persistently exporting to a game engine. Shray Khanna goes over some finer points for creating the LOD group in Maya covering some LOD Group Node settings for optimum workflow.
