At some point, you may have seen some of the crazy and exciting previews from Thiago Costa’s latest project Lagoa.com, which showed essentially and amazingly, an almost full-blown 3D application in the browser. Thiago was the mind behind the incredible Lagoa MultiPhysics Simulation Software in Softimage, and his latest efforts creating a system for creating 3D in the cloud are still nothing short of jaw dropping.

Lagoa.com is interactive photo-real 3D scene creation and rendering in the cloud. It is not a modeler, however you can import your own assets and create, texture, light and render scenes. This opens up quite a few things in production work, one of them most notably is the possibility of NEVER being chained to a desktop machine again. If you have any machine that can run a browser, you can put together scenes, materials, lighting and render incredible looking 3D images.

Forget about being chained to a desktop and use massive cloud power to create

The other thing that creating and rendering scenes in the cloud offers is the ability for realtime project collaboration, not only facilitated with fast previews and renders, but also with centralized assets, and direct communication with project team members.

Lagoa.com offers the power of the cloud for creating 3D scenes and rendering using their proprietary MultiOptics Rendering with physically based materials, and Lagoa offers this without any special hardware needed, simply anything that can run a browser.

Lagoa runs three different plans depending on your needs, offering plans for the professional, for the enterprise and for the developer where you can make use of the tools and framework APIs for Lagoa.

The professional account will allow you to sign up for free and provides 5 hours of rendering per month, the ability to create unlimited public projects, and 1GB of cloud storage. The basic free account does not offer the option to make projects private, so they will all be accessible to the public.

If you need to have your projects private, the next plan up is signing up for an individual account for $35.00 per month which will allow for 5 private projects and also increases the rendering to 30 hours per month.

I strongly recommend that you check out the the free account and mess around with Lagoa.com, and prepare to see the future.

  1. Awesome. Thanks for the heads-up about this. I just created an account there, and am looking forward to experimenting with it.
