While working on another project, Jamie Hamel-Smith came across a situation where he needed to cover an entire model with plenty of individual components, objects and materials, in one material. The challenge was to replace all the materials with one material, for testing purposed, and easily get it back to the original state.

There might be a situation (testing lighting for example) where you want to take an already textured hierarchy and apply a new material to all of the objects

Jamie notes that there are plenty of techniques for doing such a task, and here he demonstrates one technique and also makes note of a script that actually has similar functionality in Cinema 4D, Material Override. Check out Jamie’s technique for creating a Material Override in Cinema 4D here.

We have also seen Yader’s technique for creating a material override in Cinema 4D easily without the use of plugins in a previous post.
