Connecting things with the Expression Pick Whip is pretty simple in After Effects, that is to say if you are connecting scale to scale, they are both equal… however how do you connect two or more things that don’t really line up – such as a value that runs 0-100 and another parameter value that runs in percentages?
Here Rian Fiske dives into the Linear Function in the After Effects Expressions which will allow you to do just that – create a linearized scale of reference for connected values.
Today you’ll learn the details of the Linear Function, an expression that could change how you approach animation within After Effects
Even in a nodal based application, one to one connections are easy, while unlike attributes require a bit more to them. The Linear Function acts as an interpolative function in After Effects, allowing you to dictate a scale at while the numbers will correspond – something that can be extremely useful, as Rian notes here.
