Booleans?

One of the things that I miss about working in a solid modeling application is the ability to create boolean operations that… well that essentially work. When you are polygon modeling, booleans are sort of hit and miss.
Yes sure, we have all learned new ways to get around creating holes in objects, some of them more effective than others. You must admit though, there are few things more intuitive than subtracting, adding, or intersecting two physical forms.

Try to remember back six months ago or so, when The foundry teased some new technology for Modo – Mesh Fusion – which seemed like something that would kind of revolutionize how we deal with models in 3D.

The Foundry Releases Mesh Fusion for Modo

Well, as luck would have it, The foundry has released Mesh Fusion as a plugin for Modo. If you are a Modo user, you can now enjoy creating booleans between subdivision surfaces – with a ridiculous level of ease I might add.

“Every once in a while a new toolset comes along that changes everything. MeshFusion is one of those tools! Definite game changer!”William Vaughn, Academic Director, Digital Animation and Visual Effects School

Mesh Fusion’s goal is to set aside the technicalities of model building and create a more visceral experience, almost as if you were using real world materials such as putty or clay.  You can interactively add, subtract, or blend objects while still maintaining high quality subdivision surface models.

This revolutionary new modeling plugin is available exclusively for MODO 701 SP4 and opens up a new world of creative possibilities for artists and designers

As a plugin for Modo, MF can be used with deformers as well as the other Modo modeling tools. Mesh Fusion features three editing modes with 3D Tree Fusion, Fusion Strip, and Schematic Fusion, all resulting in a single unified mesh that is ready for more editing or export to a 3D Printer. Modo Mesh Fusion is actually built on previous Groboto Technology.

Interestingly, the Foundry’s Mesh Fusion was explosively developed for Modo 701 by Braid Art Labs – the makers of Groboto, the 3D modeling application that is built to create complex recursive, procedural meshes easily, while bringing an intuitive workflow to modeling.

To really appreciate MeshFusion, you really need to see it in action. Check out the examples The Foundry have put together in this tutorial video series
