Matt shows a technique for creating “false” shape layers in Cinema 4D. The external compositing, and compositing tag also play a big role for creating 3D layer composition in After Effects.

Cinema 4D and After Effects are meant to work really well together. And this is a great introduction into using them both and into the process behind using whatever is at hand and best for the job to create the final result. The right tool for the right job is not just for carpentry. Using the best bits of Cinema 4D and the best bits of After Effects come together here to create a slick little animation.
