Environment Texture Artist, Hugo Beyer gives us some insights into creating a carved wooden panel in Maya and Zbrush, looking at basic polygon modeling to reproduce the panel from a reference image. The model will form the basis of the texture that can be used in-game with paralax mapping with vertex colors and normal map.
This is the first part of a multipart tutorial, with this section covering how to model the leaves and flower with a clean mesh flow. Then Hugo demonstrates some sculpting in Zbrush and projecting the mesh on to a plane with the correct resolution, and adds details to the edges and recesses of the model.
